use of CT in Covid19

ROLE OF CT IMAGING IN DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS OF COVID-19

High resolution computerized tomography scan are often used as an efficient modality for corona virus disease 2019(COVID -19) being a useful alternative to PCR especially in hospitalized and PCR negative patients.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of high resolution CT scan in diagnosis and prognosis of COVID 19 and to ascertain the sensitivity specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive value. We also aimed to match HRCT findings with PCR in COVID 19 patients to seek out the severity, prognosis and staging of COVID-19 corona virus disease.

This was a cross sectional prospective observational study and was administered in department of Radiology and imaging, Kericho county referral Hospital-Kenya

There were a total of 600 patients evaluated with HRCT findings and correlated with PCR as gold standard. Sensitivity was about 96% for chest CT, specificity 76%, PPV 97% accuracy 95% and NPV 62%.

It was noted that HRCT scan of chest were most useful modality for COVID -19 patients in the aim of diagnosis and response to treatment. It was a crucial indicator for future prognosis. HRCT were often a crucial alternative of PCR in symptomatic patients when PCR was negative where facilities are available. It was important for the Imaging specialist and clinicians to be familiar with different manifestations on CT. It was a golden diagnosis and in management planning for these patients
